What War and Peace is, I suppose, it the biggest and baddest attempt at experimental/historical fiction ever attempted. Tolstoy, War & Peace (Richard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky's translation, Alfred A. War-and-peace-maude Although Brigg's translation is excellent, I am most familiar with the Maude translation. The list would have been a little more helpful if they had included the publisher The Pevear and Volokhonsky translations of Tolstoy's works, they say, goes a long way in diminishing the intimidation factor of Leo Tolstoy. (In my last post, I introduced the strange--strange, to me anyway--use of the phrase "clerical persons" in the Unction scene in Volume 1, Book 1 of War and Peace. I tried this novel many times in other I hope they're at work on War and Peace. [3] War and Peace (Pevear/Volokhonsky, Knopf). I am no expert on the subject of course, but would like to perhaps read War and Peace again at christmas time. My favorite novel of all novels is The Brothers Karamazov in the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation. Talk about getting your money's worth. So, upon learning from a newspaper article that the publication of a Pevear and Volokhonsky translation of Tolstoy's War and Peace is imminent, it struck me that now would be a good moment for me to tackle that classic tome. It would seem that the only translation of War and Peace that an even mildly informed reader in 2013 would choose would be that by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. But, when it comes to Tolstoi I really, really like the translations by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky (they did the War & Peace I'm working on). "As long as 'War and Peace' " is a comparison understood even by people who have never cracked its covers. It's a little strange to see War and Peace at 50 and no Anna Karenina or Crime and Punishment in sight given they're generally the more popular translated texts. In this case (War and Peace), the Kindle edition is NOT the translation that's mentioned in the product description (Pevear and Volokhonsky). After reading their 2007 translation of War and Peace, Orlando Figes, the eminent Russian historian, did not mince words about Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. (1713-68) had a marked influence on the young Tolstoy, particularly with his Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy(1768), which stands behind Tolstoy's first piece of fiction, 'A History of Yesterday' (1851), and part of which Tolstoy translated. Has anyone read the My favorite War & Peace translation is the one by Pevear & Volokhonsky.
